RSF’s 2022 World Press Freedom Index : A new Era of Polarisation

3 May 2022. Today, on Press Freedom Day, M100 partner Reporters Without Borders has published its 2022 Press Freedom Rankings. In no region has press freedom deteriorated as much as in Europe, especially in Eastern Europe.

New crises and wars as well as resurgent conflicts threaten press freedom worldwide. The 2022 Press Freedom Rankings show that they not only pose a threat to the life and limb of media professionals – they have also been accompanied by a variety of repressive measures with which governments try to gain information sovereignty. I am very moved, especially because I was not expecting to hear these words, which are like an embrace for me. So I want to thank you for this award, for the incredibly moving words of Giovanni di Lorenzo, for this wonderful sky that has welcomed me to Potsdam, and also to thank the Federal Chancellor for her touching words, and for her encouraging presence. At the same time, today’s prize is an appeal to all persons who hold positions of responsibility in governments, in culture and in the media: be steadfast, value-oriented and also COURAGEOUS when irresponsible persons and powers undermine or relativise our values of freedom.
