While still a student, Gabriel Mateescu has been working in the local and national media of Romania for almost two years. Throughout this time, he has mainly collaborated with three media outlets: Info Sud-Est, a local investigative team in Constanța, the national investigative platform Context.ro and the national media outlet G4Media.ro, the last of which mainly through ENTR – a European media project with a strong focus on young people and their issues.
His work included contributions to several local, national and transnational investigations into topics such as embezzlement of European funds, the conservation of cultural and historical heritage and illegal transactions of plagiarized academic works.
On the other hand, he has covered issues such as environmental conservation in the Danube Delta and beyond and the experiences of the Ukrainian refugee community in Constanța through varied series of reports, interviews and analyses.
In 2024, together with Delia Dascălu, he won the third place in the “journalistic debut” category at the Superscrieri awards of Romania, for a journalistic investigation into a network of websites selling plagiarized academic works to university students, under the guise of offering “consulting” services.
