Dr Katja Muñoz has been a Research Fellow in the DGAP Technology and Foreign Policy Programme since June 2022.

Her research focuses on the interplay between social media and politics to more effectively combat disinformation, strengthen our democracy, and rebuild trust. The project she is currently leading aims to better understand how influencers interact within different social media ecosystems and to understand their overall mobilisation potential in order to develop better approaches to platform regulation and combat disinformation more effectively.

Previously, Katja Muñoz worked as a research consultant at the intersection of technology and policy. Her work focused on researching current developments and contextualising them to make digital policy more accessible. Through her background in security, she also worked as a consultant on topics such as risks and opportunities of new technologies, early warning systems and predictive intelligence, and democracy and digital policy.

After her studies in International Relations in Rome, Katja Muñoz earned a Master’s degree in Peace and Security Studies at the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy in Hamburg and a PhD in Security Policy at the University of Hamburg.
