21 young Journalists at M100YEJ

5 August 2022. Disinformation, fake news and mental health are the topics the participants of the M100 Young European Journalists Workshop #M100YEJ are dealing with this year.

From over 70 applications from all over Europe, we have selected 21 young journalists from 17 European countries who will work on these topics, train and network with each other from 10 to 14 September. The seminar will take place in the rooms of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Berlin.

A visit to the Storymachine agency rounds off the programme.

An overview of all participants and seminar leaders with info on their CVs can be found here.

The highlight of the M100YEJ is the participation in the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium on 15 September in Potsdam, where the results and findings of the six-day workshop will be presented.

We thank all workshop trainers for their commitment and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and Press and Information Office of the Federal Government of Germany for their support!

M100 Special Talk with Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu and Wolfgang Ischinger

1 August 2022. The Balkans, like the Baltic States, are considered an important stabilising factor for Europe. However, the countries of the Balkans harbour a great potential for conflict that can also endanger stability in Europe in the long term. The current tensions between Serbia and Kosovo show how fragile the situation in the Balkans is. To date, Serbia, Russia, China, India, Spain and Greece do not recognise Kosovo’s independence.

While the former Soviet countries Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have been clearly critical of Russia for many years and have been members of the EU since 2004, the attitude towards Russia in the Western Balkans is rather indifferent. According to a survey, 40 percent of the Serbian population would rather join Russia than continue the EU accession process.

Moreover, some of the Balkan countries, which were offered the prospect of EU membership as early as 2003, have been waiting for years to join the EU because they simply do not meet the Copenhagen criteria for admission – key words being the rule of law, freedom of the media and corruption.

Russian Invasion in Ukraine Awakens Fear and Flashbacks in Kosovo

21 July 2022. Visar Xhambazi, M100 alumnus, works as a project manager at Sbunker, a blog on current affairs in Kosovo, covering politics, society and economics. His text first appeared on “forumZFD“:

“President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine on February 24, 2022, stunned the world. That move produced seismic shockwaves across Europe, and in particular in the Western Balkans, a region which went through the devastating consequences of war only three decades ago. People in Kosovo and in the Western Balkans understand the consequences of war, ethno-centric narratives, and nationalism. There are many in Kosovo who are following the news about Ukraine with a sense of fear and paranoia.
