Martin is an award-winning investigative journalist with a passion for user-centered news innovation. As editor-in-chief he runs the newsroom of DER STANDARD in Vienna, which publishes an independent quality newspaper as well as derStandard.at, Austria’s largest privately owned quality news site.

Before, Martin has been deputy editor-in-chief of ZEIT ONLINE (www.zeit.de), one of Germany’s major and fastest growing news sites, which is currently visited by ten million users per month. He focused on strategic development, ran editorial product & innovation, investigative reporting, engagement (community, social media, seo), interactive storytelling, and data science. He co-led the teams that created ZEIT’s Innovation Report, that re-launched ZEIT ONLINE, and that launched the new pay solution Z+.

As a Knight Journalism Fellow ’14 at Stanford University Martin learned about innovation, leadership, and entrepreneurship in media. Using the design thinking methodology he’s learned from Stanford’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (d.school), Martin is now creating new solutions for journalism that focus on the users’ needs.

Martin has been spending more than ten years with Germany’s most respected news organizations. He has been working in print and digital newsrooms. Martin was an investigative editor at the largest weekly paper, Die Zeit in Berlin. At the major daily newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung in Munich, he edited the news analysis section „Page Two“, was a politics editor, and a science writer.

Martin was named one of the „Top 30 under 30“ journalists in Germany and also received several awards.

In his spare time, Martin has co-founded the Stanford Austria Club, leads a theater group in his hometown, and serves as a judge for the Online News Association’s Online Journalism Awards and for the Society for News Design’s Best in Digital Competition. He also holds a diploma in Biology (Neuroscience) from the University of Munich. Martin is from Vienna, Austria.
