Born 1937 in Prague, dies in Vienna on 10 December 2023.
In 1948 Schwarzenberg moved with his family to Austria. In 1965 he took over the inheritance of his uncle Heinrich. After the death of his other uncle Joseph he became internal head of the Schwarzenberg family and united in his person the two lines (Primogenitur and Sekundogenitur) of the family. He became involved in human rights at an international level at an early age. From 1984 to 1991 he was President of the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights. After the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia and the election of Václav Havel as President of the Republic, Schwarzenberg served from 1990 to 1992 as his office manager entitled Chancellor. Schwarzenberg was Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic from 2007 to 2009 and from 2010 to 2013. He was one of the most popular Czech politicians. Schwarzenberg was married and has three adult children.

At the same time, today’s prize is an appeal to all persons who hold positions of responsibility in governments, in culture and in the media: be steadfast, value-oriented and also COURAGEOUS when irresponsible persons and powers undermine or relativise our values of freedom. But I have to say that in our modern society the media has a very, very particular responsibility, also for the European idea. And I hope that the event today – and the events which will follow – will help us to communicate better, to explain better and to convince people that Europe – and acknowledging all the problems, the mistakes and the deficits – […] that at the end of the day the idea of European integration is the best idea that we have ever developed in our history.
