Düzen Tekkal: The People of Iran need our Support!

13 September 2023. “I am very grateful that the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium dedicates the M100 Media Award 2023 to the freedom movement in Iran for “Woman – Life – Freedom” and it is also of special significance that a fearless woman like Shima Babaei is accepting this award on its behalf!,” says Düzen Tekkal, journalist, human rights activist and founder of HÁWAR.help. “With HÁWAR.help we have been supporting women like Shima Babaei from day 1 of the new wave of revolutionary protests that started with the murder of Jina Mahsa Amini one year ago. Like the women who are now fighting for their self-determination, Babaei challenged the regime and its systemic misogyny back in 2017 – and had to flee the country due to the life-threatening situation for her. Her father is still missing today. The people of Iran deserve to live in freedom, human dignity, and political self-determination – and they need all of our support to make this dream come true!”Together with German-Iranian actress and musician Jasmin Tabatabai and Iranian women’s rights activist and sports influencer Mersedeh Shahinkar, Düzen Tekkal will make a political statement at tomorrow’s award ceremony at the Orangery Palace in Potsdam-Sanssouci. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will deliver the laudatory speech.

The M100 Media Award ceremony will be streamed live on 14 September from 18:00 (CET).

Astrid Frohloff on the justification of the M100 Media Award to #WomenLifeFreedom

8. September 2023. Astrid Frohloff, TV presenter, journalist and M100 Advisory Board member, on the reasons for honouring the #WomenLifeFreedom movement of Iran with the M100 Media Award this year, which will be accepted by Iranian women’s rights activist Shima Babaei in Potsdam on 14 September:
“The resistance of courageous women in Iran is deeply impressive. Many women are risking their freedom and sometimes their lives to protest against decades of gender inequality and discrimination against women in Iran. M100 supports women’s struggle for fundamental freedoms by honouring the Women, Life, Freedom Movement of Iran and advocating for an immediate end to state violence and the safe release of thousands of politically imprisoned citizens.”
The laudatory speech at #WomenLifeFreedom will be held by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the EU Commission. The event will be streamed live from 6 pm (CET).

M100YEJ Rina Zhubi: Climate change not a political but a scientific issue

5 September 2023. Does journalism need to change in the face of climate change –  or not? This is one of the questions we asked the applicants for this year’s M100 Young European Journalism Workshop (M100YEJ), which starts next Sunday, 10 September, at the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Potsdam. The answers were very diverse and are sure to spark heated discussions at the workshop.

For example, participant Rina Zhubi believes: “While the principles of objectivity and balance have long been considered the holy grail of truth-telling in journalism, the approach inadvertently creates a false balance in climate reporting, preventing the public from seeing the clear scientific picture of climate change. Climate change shouldn’t be considered a political story but a science story.”

Kai Diekmann on the reasons for the M100 Media Award to #WomenLifeFreedom

30 August 2023. M100 Advisory Board member Kai Diekmann on why the #WomenLifeFreedom movement of Iran was chosen to receive this year’s M100 Media Award, which will be accepted by Iranian women’s rights activist Shima Babaei on 14 September in Potsdam:
“The people of Iran – especially Iranian women and girls – have been taking to the streets for months, protesting for freedom, equality and human dignity. Against their own government, which oppresses, tortures, mutilates and murders them.
With the M100 Media Award, we want to encourage these women and men to keep going and not give up until they have defeated the mullahs and can live in free self-determination.
After the people of Ukraine, whom we honoured last year for their determined and heroic defence of their freedom and sovereignty against the brutal Russian invasion, the choice of the Women, Life, Freedom Movement of Iran this year is only logical.”
